PengGo Airline

Description: Designed a functional airline app that allows you to book and trakc your information all with variables. As well as created a unique design system for the app that goes in depth with all aspects of the design

Year: 2025

Tools: Figma

Project Type: User Interface, Prototyping

Using figma variables to their full potential to create a fully functional airline booking app, while in the process create my own unique design system to understand how large companies operate

The Problem?

  1. Create a fully functioning airline in figma using variables

  1. Create solid branding and identity

  1. Using my brand identity develop my own design system

Challenges

  1. Variables are complicated

  1. Unique brand identity can be hard to find

  1. Design systems need to be thorough and comprehensive

  1. Airline booking apps are very extensive

Planning

First step was to first figure out what vibe I wanted to go for. I really wanted to make a winter weather themed airline so I decided to pick three cold locations and go from there. This then led me to figuring out how to connect all of these flights to make an easy booking app without too many complications since it was figma afterall.

On the right are some of the tests I did with variables after figuring out what locations I wanted. This test allowed me to mess with variables and set up how things connect

The Design

From here I decided to create my actually brand identity, and I decided to go with the name PengGo because penguins often fit cold climates. I wanted PengGo to stick out but not be too cluttered and this was quite a challenge.

Overall I think PengGo ended up being easy to use and fun to view.

PengGo

PengGo is a friendly winter airline booking app which aims to keep users feeling cool and safe as they travel the snowy climates of the northeast. PengGo utlizies cool blues and icy effects to engage the users while drawing attention

Screens

It was pretty hard to bring this to life but thorugh figma variables I was able to make functional screens that connected and did everything a booking app would do. The toughest part was actually making everything cohesive and lining up variables to change what I need to. I did a lot of research on what other airline booking apps looked like and I tried to look for a lot of winter themed apps that might help give me the snow effect I was looking for. I eventually landed on these pictured below which are just a few of my screens. I took a lot of inspiration from apples liquid glass effect to get those icy containers I wanted

Variables

After setting up my flow I tackled the majority of my variables. My list of variables was very extensive, I tried to set up variables in a way that made sense and would feel very corporate with certain naming conventions. Along the way it got a bit hard though as I added more and got a little overwhelmed but overall I think adding all of the variables made afunctionalitiy really nice and easy when I had to set things up. The more variables I was able to add the easier it was.

Design System

After I had made my functioning airline I moved on to full polishing and making my design system. Listed below are all of the parts of my design system. It was fairly simple to make as I just had to take out all the parts of my airline. The hardest part was making sure that it was easy to understand and giving clear guidelines for specific parts of it. I wanted it to feel professional and that was pretty tough

Takeaways

This was a very tough but fun project for me. Often times I felt challenged by trying to figure out how to use variables in a very complex way. It felt like I was making

something that would've been done with code but wasn't needed because of the variables. Creating a design system was a really good look into what companies

might have me do or use in the future so I feel this was incredibly valuable knowledge to learn and utilize. I had a really fun but of course frustrating time creating

this airline but i'm glad I did because I came out with many new useful skills and techniques.
